Travellers have long mystified the Skeleton Coast with its intriguing stories of shipwrecks, desolate dunes and beach roaming carnivores.  But due to its harsh environment and long history under varying control and protection, few people have had the opportunity to experience this fascinating corner of the world.  With a new eco-tourism venture, the northern sector of the Skeleton Coast is becoming more accessible to the high scale adventure traveller.

Sandwich Harbour tour

Sandwich Harbour is where the Namib Desert meets the ocean. This small area about 45km south of Walvis Bay contains a large saltwater lagoon, extensive tidal mudflats, and a band of reed-lined pools fed by freshwater springs – which together form one of the most important refuges for birdlife in southern Africa. Typically you’ll find about 30 species of birds at Sandwich at any given time. 

Living Desert Tour

The Desert tour offers an extraordinary exploration of the coastal dune belt outside Swakopmund.

Zeila Shipwreck & Cape Cross Tour

The Cape Cross peninsula is of both historic and ecological significance, as it is the site of one of the first landings by European seafarers. It is also the home of some 100 000 cape fur seals. It was here that Diego Cao erected a stone cross in honour of a safe sea journey from Portugal in 1486.

Henitiesbay – the “Free Republic of Wlotzka’s Baken”, some 40 km north of Swakopmund. This self-sustaining settlement of wooden cabins and bungalows on the beach is the haven of many beach anglers. Once past the town of Hentiesbay, the road will lead past expansive salt pans where rock salt is being mined and refined.

Dolphin & Seal tour
