WELGEVONDEN GAME RESERVE

Big 5 Safari in the Welgevonden!

Welgevonden game reserve lies within the Waterberg District, of the Limpopo Province of South Africa. It forms part of the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve which was officially declared by UNESCO in 2001 and currently covers an area in excess of 654,033 hectare

The reserve comprises mountainous terrain that is dissected by deep valleys while flat plateaus characterize most hilltops. Altitude varies from 1,080 m in the north to ±1800 m in the southern section of the reserve. With a size of 98,000 acres, in mountain bushveld surrounding by rivers, this private reserve has never been used for game hunting, so the wildlife is more relaxed and approachable.

The Reserve was founded in 1987 and constitutes farmland that has been reclaimed for wildlife conservation and it has extensively been re-stocked with numerous species including the Big Five: lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino, and cheetah. Home to over 50 different mammals and various antelope species with a diverse birdlife to be found in the rolling bushveld terrain. It has one of the largest populations of white rhino on any private reserve in Africa!

The diversity of habitat leads to a wide range of wildlife with grassy plains abounding with antelope from the largest eland to the diminutive duiker; all of which attract the large predators such as lion, leopard and cheetah are regularly seen close by. There are also numerous rare and unusual species such as brown hyena, aardwolf, pangolin and aardvark – all best seen at night. Over 300 bird species can be seen on the reserve, including rare blue cranes which breed in the southern section early in the year.
Visiting guests will enjoy unlimited traversing through the reserve and experience an environment where biodiversity conservation and game viewing are managed in harmony. Welgevonden protects a unique and special environment and the reserve’s management is deeply committed to ongoing conservation, research and development.

Welgevonden Reserve Lodge

Big 5 safari days!

The Lodge is a private and exclusive bush lodge situated in Welgevonden Game Reserve which is a well-established Big 5 game reserve in the Limpopo Province of South Africa and in the heart of the Waterberg Biosphere. Positioned in one of the ‘sweeter’ bushveld areas in the western section of the reserve, with an abundance of plains game which will in turn attract the large number of predator species which occur in the reserve. The elevated position offers beautiful and uninterrupted views over the reserve and up the Waterberg escarpment.

The Lodge was built using eco-friendly, ‘green’ products and runs off solar power and blends into the surrounds with low impact on the environment. All paints and consumables used for the construction and running of the lodge are eco-friendly and no hard woods were used. Even the sewerage system is eco-friendly. Efforts have been made to give the lodge a low carbon footprint by making use of solar power which is a renewable energy source and a nearby borehole for water.

The main lodge boasts a comfortable lounge and reception area with large viewing deck and swimming pool. Relax on the loungers around the pool while you may be lucky to see animals moving in to the local waterhole. As evening approaches enjoy a sundowner at the bar or move out on game drive in search of the many species which occur within the reserve. The lodge is unfenced and offers a real nature experience.

This is an exclusive lodge, catering for a maximum of 10 guests in well positioned and well-appointed luxury tents. Accommodation is in luxury tents which are more like canvas lodge rooms with lovely views and very well-acquainted bathrooms. Large double beds and outside lounges allow you complete comfort and relaxation in a true wilderness setting. Dinners are around the campfire and traditional South African meals are served in the main lodge. Natural & rustic finishes blend perfectly with the environment. Since this is an eco-lodge and is completely solar run, it thus cannot run high voltage appliances. Guests with hair dryers and similar products that use many Watts will be requested to leave their appliances in the vehicle at the gate or to not use it.

The lodge is unfenced and in a big 5 area and guests may not walk out of the vicinity of the lodge at any time. Their movements are restricted between the top tent and the bottom tent if there is not a staff member with them and it is advisable to stay on the pathways. At night time, guests are advised to not walk around unnecessarily and to allow a staff member to walk them to their tents after dark. Guests should be aware of their surroundings. Animals such as elephants occasionally walk around the camp and they can also watch out for snakes, scorpions and baboons. Please keep tents or rooms closed .
