Garden Route

Southern Africa coastline

The Garden Route of South Africa encompasses many coastal towns along the south western coast of the Western Cape. It spans from Hermanus (whale birthing haven) in the west to Plettenberg Bay’s in the east. The Garden Route natural assets (just for starters) will have you question ever wanting to leave this idyllic spot!

Featuring rolling oceans, white sandy beaches, blue skies and spectacular mountain ranges! Here you can find indigenous fynbos, ostrich antics and lots of local hospitality. Sun-drenched orchards, pin-drop-silent forests, sweeping in-land lakes and birds eye view passes add to the mix.

Beach junkies are spoiled for choice. Stilbaai’s assets include treasures from the Stone Age and the Khoi people. Mosselbay and Albertinia share the pleasure of bungee jumping thrills with Plettenberg Bay. Mosselbay prides itself on offering the diverse experience of game viewing and that of stringing a hammock along beaches that serve up the world’s second most temperate climate. Still along the coast, Wilderness and Sedgefield comprise the Lakes Region, while golf, green coastal treasures and malls a-plenty rate among George and Knysna’s endless offerings.

ACTIVITIES
Leap into paragliding oblivion at the Wilderness, or embark on Mosselbay shark cage diving shenanigans. Try the bungi jump from the Gouritz River Bridge, which is flanked by Albertinia and Mosselbay.

Knysna Hotel

Quaint & Unique!

This boutique 5 star Hotel in Knysna which offers guests an extra special experience. Located on Thesen Islands which is considered one of the most the prestigious locations on the Garden Route.

The Hotel and Spa was an ambitious project which transformed the old power station into a unique 5 star boutique hotel on the Garden Route with a massive wow factor. All the old machinery which was used in this power station has been loving restored and forms an integral part of the hotels’ aesthetics. The creative recycling of this old building and the implementation of several energy saving measures stands as a laudable example of environmental sustainability and a respect for Knysna’s architectural heritage.

The Hotel is surrounded by water on three sides, and comprises the Island Café (a la carte restaurant, seating 90 people) and Tapas Bar, as well as 26 (17 standard suites, six luxury suites and one honeymoon suite) individually themed suites of the highest standard. The hotel has a rim flow pool with deck facing onto the canal. Common areas include an art gallery showcasing emerging local SA talent. Our Water Club also offers an ATM and the Deli is a Wi-Fi hotspot.

ACTIVITIES
The Water Club offers al fresco dining from our deli, oysters from our champagne bar and a wide variety of activities on both land and the Knysna lagoon. The Spa offers the ultimate escape for pure self-indulgence with double and single treatment rooms.

Knysna Elephant Park

Up close & personal with the giants!

The Elephants are all orphans rescued from culling operations in the Kruger National Park, except for Thandi who was born in the park. The Knysna Elephant Park provides these elephants with the best board and lodging and their diet is scientifically supervised by veterinarians. The elephants have free range of the 60-hectare camp on which there is plenty to eat, some big trees to rub up against and two large dams for bathing and drinking.

At night the elephants are housed in a boma. The Elephants are fed a high protein porridge and black wattle branches at night. Their stalls are lined with sawdust providing a comfortable bed for them to sleep on. In the morning they are fed the high protein porridge and move onto the first dam for a drink of water.
Their stalls are cleaned and prepared for the evening. The baby elephants, Bulelo, Malaika and Jabari are bottle-fed on baby milk formula with added vitamins and minerals on demand throughout the day and the night. They each have to have a minder that stays with them constantly. The elephant minders are some of Africa’s most qualified keepers and they keep a watchful eye on the herd.

The present KEP herd numbers ten – the largest domesticated matriarchal herd in the country. KEP style of management offers guests the opportunity to get up close and personal with our elephants, on elephant terms. Responsible and educational interactions allow guests to appreciate the awe-inspiring presence of these animals, but still give the elephants the space and freedom to choose where they want to move, what they want to eat and who they want to interact with. There are no fences to spoil the close encounter and our environment encourages elephants to exhibit natural behaviours.

For twenty years, the Park’s primary objective has been to offer elephants in the need the chance of a new and better home; and have worked tirelessly to achieve this goal.

ACTIVITIES
Elephant experiences include Daily Guided Tours (departing from reception every 30 minutes), as well as Breakfast Picnic Walks in the morning and Elephant Walks in the afternoon.

PRIVATE GAME RESERVE

Get up-close and personal with Africa’s mightiest mammals! The game reserve is set on the foothills of the magnificent Outeniqua Mountains near Mossel Bay and George in a Malaria Free area in South Africa’s Garden Route

Imagine yourself and your partner sipping on a glass of wine and enjoying a lavish picnic basket, on a riverbank, in the heart of the African wilderness and being watched over by elephants!

Pinnacle Point Golf Course

Enjoy a full day of golf!

This 18 hole championship golf course was designed by the well-known South African golf course architect Peter Matkovich who opened the course together with Top Irish Tour Golf Professional Darren Clarke in November 2006.
The Pinnacle Point Golf Course is something truly unique for the discerning golfer!

This cliff top Fynbos golf course inspires the golfer to play this challenging layout with a level of respect due to its dramatic views and breath-taking terrain. The 72-par layout is characterized by 7 majestic holes that line the Indian Ocean rock cliffs, 4 of which are played over ocean and cliff. All of the 18 holes have been designed to fit the lay of the land and it’s a true testament to the spectacular design that this was achieved.

Darren Clarke, who was also involved with many aspects of the Pinnacle Point course design, has said Pinnacle Point is “… the best golf course on the planet.” Pinnacle Point was selected as one of the Top Ten New Golf Courses of the World for 2006 by the American publication Travel and Leisure in January 2007.

The reintroduction of the endemic fauna and flora to this estate has been hailed as a remarkable achievement by local and international ecologists and the preservation of this pristine Fynbos is an ongoing commitment by the Pinnacle Point Beach and Golf Resort. Pinnacle Point is located on four hundred hectares of prime land, of which 100 hectares is nature reserve, home to indigenous wildlife, birdlife and 264 varieties of fynbos.

Hermanus

Best whale watching location in the world!

Wedged between the mountain and the sea, the quaint hamlet of Hermanus has been rated by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) as one of the twelve best whale watching locations in the world, and it is often regarded as the heart of the whale route.

Hermanus is a mere 50 miles from Cape Town – the ideal base from which to explore the Western Cape and the Cape Overberg. Here is something for everyone. Contributory factors to the success are the mild climate, natural scenic beauty and the range of outdoor activities available. Pristine stretches of beach offer solitude to the walker and boating activities abound in the Kleinriver Lagoon, renowned for its birdlife. The Old Harbour complex in Hermanus offers the visitor an insight into Hermanus’ past as a Fisherman’s village and marine life.

Hermanus is firmly established on the Epicurean map with its myriad of restaurants, fine wine, fresh vegetables cheese and fish.
